BRITANNIA
“ALIAS THE DEACON” “Alias the Deacon,” a UniversalJewel production with Jean Hersholt in the starring role, will be shown at the Britannia Theatre to-night. Much of the charm of the picture is directly due to the able direction of Edward Sloman, who stamps the production w T ith the same sense of “human interest” which marks every release bearing his name. “Alias the Deacon” is a picturization of John B. Hymer’s stage success, and was adapted to the screen by the prominent screen and stage writer, Charles Kenyon. The large supporting cast included June Marlowe, Ralph Graves, Myrtle Stedman, Lincoln Plummer, Ned Sparks, Tom Kennedy, Maurice Murphy, George West, and others. “Cabaret,” starring Gilda Gray, will also be shown. Club Costigan, with its liveried doorman, high-jacking waiters, fizzed water, two-by-four dance floor, jazz bands and bandits, giddy girls, giddier customers, bootleggers and bootlickers, — is the background against which “Cabaret” takes place. Gilda is the poor girl who leaves her squalid flat to win success as a dancer —and does. Tom Moore, cne of the Moore brothers, plays opposite the star; comical Chester Conklin enacts her father. Robert G. Vignola directed this picturisation of Owen Davis’ original screen story.
Tom Wilson, former . heavyweight boxer and trainer of Bob Fitzsimmons for his famous fight with James Jeffries, is in Fred Thomson’s second Paramount picture, “A Pioneer Scout.” He is 6ft 2in tall and weighs 2301 b. The oppressive, terrorising sound of malamutes baying at the night was one of the many thrilling experiences undergone by the Universal company at Mammoth, California, last winter during the filming of scenes for “Back to God’s Country.” Renee Adoree is the star of the picture while the supporting cast includes Robert Frazer, Walter Long, Mitchell Lewis, Adolph Millar and James Mason.
