NATIONAL AND LYRIC

“TWO GIRLS WANTED” “Two Girls Wanted.” Fox Filins version of the John Golden stage hit, with Janet Gaynor in the stellar role, had its first local showing at the National and Lyric Theatres, yesterday before highly delighted audiences. This is a production in which Miss Gaynor is cast and billed as a star, an honour she has earned with her past performances. This picture is based on the play written by Gladys Unger and tells the story of two sisters who are struggling to make a living in New York. Sarah played by Marie Mosquini, is incapacitated from work by a broken arm, and Marianna, played by Miss Gaynor, is unable to get a position. At last in desperation, Marianna dons boys’ clothes and tries to get a boy’s work. Then comes a fight with a boy, her escape and an embarrassing situation when she hits a young man, Dexter Wright, with an over-ripe tomato intended for the boy. The succeeding episodes are splendidly and logically motivated, and the romance of the two develops through a series of situations that swing twixt humour and tears. “Two Girls Wanted” does credit to all who had any hand in the making of it, including the cast of supporting players with Glenn Tryon in male lead Alfred Green who directed the picture. It is fine entertainment that the whole family will enjoy.
