While bathing in the Manawat i River at Ashhurst, oji the occasion o. the Palmerston North butchers’ pienn a lad named Dudley Chatfieid had < narrow escape from drowning. He g* • into difficulties and disappeared- H was rescued in an unconscious condition. but artificial respiration was quickly applied and undoubtedly saved hie life. The other mishap occurred at the Gorge. Airs. E. Alartin, of Fapatav.. and her children were picnicking in the Gorge and were joined there by some cousins from Dannevirke. So\ eral of the children were bathing and two of the girls got into difficulties. Both girls were carried into a whir - poo! below' the rapids. Fortunately the driver of a car, Mr. L Walkley, Palmerston North, sa *-* what had occurred and effected a snia t rescue. Both girls were exhausted and had to receive medical attention.
