CITY'S TELEPHONES

WAITING LIST REDUCED INSTALLATIONS UP-TO-DATE Auckland has no complaints to make about its telephone services. Considering the handicaps under which the department worked for nearly two years it has done wonders in providing telephones for the city’s large population. At present the telephone department at Auckland is right up to date with its installations. There are still a few to be installed in the Remuera district but these will be put in shortly. There are between 15,000 and 16,000 telephone subscribers in Auckland and the suburbs. This is equalled only by Wellington, which has the largest number of subscribers in any city in the Dominion. Between IS months and two years ago the waiting list of subscribers for telephones in Auckland started to grow and as the department could not obtain the necessary material for the installations the list grew to large proportions. Since the material became available, however, the department has worked

busily, with the result that ail subscribers have been satisfied. The extension to the central telephone exchange in Wellesley Street is nearing completion and in a few months it should be ready for occupation by the telephone department. The third floor will be used for the extension of the automatic telephone exchange, and the rest of the building for other branches of the department. The building has been designed to take further extensions for many years to come.
