CARS TELESCOPED

RAILWAY YARD MISHAP BRAKES ACT SUDDENLY Two raliway carriages were telescoped in the Auckland station yard •on Saturday evening, when the Westinghouse brakes clamped too suddenly during shunting operations. The Rotorua express was being shunted into the yard from the station platform, and when the engine gave the cars a “kick” over the points, the brakes on the train suddenly applied, and the speed of the engine carried it into the rear carriage. The ends of the cars were fairly badly damaged, but a peroid in the shops’ “hospital” will soon fit them for the road again. This kind of accident is not uncommon in shunting, as the brakes are liable to clamp more firmly than expected and cause a sudden stoppage.
