DEATH OF MR. W. R. HARKNESS
GOVERNMENT PRODUCE GRADER The Government dairy produce grader and cheese instructor for the Auckland Province, Mr. William Renwick Harkness, of Hamilton, died at the Auckland Hospital on Monday at the age of 58. Born near Dunedin, Mr. Harkness was employed as a boy in the Waireka Cheese Factory at Dunedin. He later moved to the Waikato district, where he was assistant in the Tauwhare Cheese Factory. He was next appointed manager of the Waitohi Cheese Factory, Marlborough, and he held that position for nine years. He was also manager of Taratahi Cheese Factory in the Wairarapa. Joining the dairy division of the Agricultural Department 15 years ago, Mr. Harkness became cheese grader and cheese instructor for the Auckland Province, with headquarters at Hamilton. He held this position until his death. One of the most competent cheese makers in New Zealand, Mr. Harkness was a valued Government instructor, and during his 15 years of office was of great service to the dairy industry in improving the quality of cheese manufactured in the Auckland Province. Factory managers throughout the province will feel his loss. Mr. Harkness was a member of Beta Waikato Masonic Lodge and was a manager of St. .Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Hamilton. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Mr. Frank Harkness, Hamilton, Mr. Leslie Harkness, Tatuanui, and two daughters, Mrs. R. A. Elliott, Frankton, and Miss Grace Harkness, Hamilton. The interment took place in Hamilton to-day.
