HOTEL BURNED
BLAZE AT NAPIER EMPIRE PRACTICALLY DESTROYED Press Association. NAPIER, To-day. A fire believed to have originated in the kitchen chimney practically demolished the Empire Hotel, a threestoreyed building, of 40 rooms, in Shakespeare Road yesterday afternoon. Only the front portion of the premises on the ground floor was left. The blaze had a good hold when the brigade arrived and the firemen’s efforts were hindered by a poor water supply until a pump was brought into action and the flames conquered after a stern battle of two hours. Nine guests lost all their belongings. The building is owned by the Gleeson Estate and was covered for £4,000 in the Commercial Union office and the contents and fittings for approximately £2.000 in the South British and National offices.
