Veteran Yacht Ariki Wins Macky Trophy
WILSON CUP TO MANENE YACHT SQUADRON’S RACING Ariki easily won the Macky Memorial Trophy in a race for A class yachts conducted by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron on Saturday afternoon. The crack veteran was handled in masterly style and headed the other competitions almost round the course. She finished 20m 23s before Rawene, the second arrival. Tho Wilson Cup went to Manene in the M class race. This boat showed the other five competitors the way in the second round of the harbour course and sailed a consistently good race. In the event for B class keelers, the prize for which was the Johnson Cup, Kotiri led practically all the way, finishing nearly 10m ahead of the nextcomer. The officials in charge of the racing were: Messrs. J. H. Frater, B. W. Beaumont, A. M. Gilmour. The course for the A and B classes was from starting line off King’s Wharf to the Bastion beacon, thence to the Salwtork’s beacon in Rangitoto Channel, thence back to the Bastion, thence back round the Saltworks, hence round the Bastion and back to King’s Wharf. Distance, 16.3 miles. M class boats were sent to the Resolution dolphin, thence across the harbour to the Sandspit beacon, thence back to King's Wharf, twice round. A CLASS Entries and handicaps in A class were: —Ariki (scr), lorangi (4m 375), Prize (7m 20s), Nga-Toa (10m 3s), Rawene (10m 3s), Victory (11m 8s). At gunfire, which sounded punctually at 2.30 p.m., the six competitors in A class got away in a fairly close 3tart. Prize led the way over the line, closely followed by Rawene. Victory was inches ahead of lorangi. Nga-Toa arrived 30s late and Ariki 535. After rounding the Bastion the boats had a dead beat to windward out to the Saltworks beacon in Rangitoto Channel. Ariki continued her lead on the beat out and on the run back again, but the others changed their positions. lorangi worked her way into second place, while Victory improved her position. On the run in for the first time Ariki had a lead of 3m 40s from lorangi. Rawene, Victory, Prize and Nga-Toa were close to one another and at one stage of the journey three of the boats raced abreast. On the beat out for the second time Rawene did well and was second boat round the Saltworks buoy. The times rounding the channel mark were: Ariki, 4h 17m 30s; Rawene, 4h 24m 14s; lorangi, 4h 24m 16s; Victory, 4h 25m 6s; Nga-Toa, 4h 26m 10s; Prize, 4h 27m ss. These positions were maintained on the run back to the Bastion. Passing the mark for the close haul to the finish, Ariki had a lead of 12m 10s from Rawene, which led lorangi by 20s, while Victory was another 54s behind that boat. Nga-Toa and Prize brought up the rear. Ariki made the trip from the Bastion beacon to the finishing dine oft King’s Wharf with a light northerly breeze which just lasted longsenough to carry the big ship over the finishing line. Then the wind faded altogether, leaving the rest of the fleet in the doldrums in Mechanics* Bay. After 10 minutes of lying becalmed the five felt the first puff of the evening land breeze from the sou’-west and were able to continue after making a short board to clear the tide deflector; A good fight was put up by lorangi, Rawene and Victory for second place. lorangi was leading Rawene until a few yards from the finish, but lorangi suddeny went about and did not finish, her owner knowing that his time concession ruled him out of the race. Rawene finished 27s ahead of Victory, but corrections placed the latter second. Nga-Toa and Prize brought up the rear. The finishing times were: Ariki (scr), 5h 17m 50s; lorangi (4m 375), 5h 37m 50s; Rawene (10m 3s), 5h 38m 13s; Victory (11m 8s), 5h 38m 40s; NgaToa (10m 3s), 5h 41m 355; Prize (7m 20s), 5h 41m 455. Kotiri assumed a long lead on the close haul down harbour and led for the remainder of the course. Delville soon gave place to Scout and Windward gradually worked into second position, but eventually yielded place to Scout. On the beat out to the Saltwork’s buoy Kotiri was followed by Waione and Windward, but when the boats returned from the channel for the last time Scout overhauled both Waione and Windward. On the run back to the King’s WTiarf mark Manene showed the way to Maroro, which was not far behind. Mawhiti held third place and Maratea, followed, 50 yards astern. The first two were holding their spinnakers well, but Mawhiti had some trouble with her extra sail. The leading pair allowed their spinnakers to sky and the sails drew better.
