GREAT POMP IN OTTAWA
SNOW GREETS PARLIAMENT BUTTER IMPORTS MAIN PROBLEM By Cable.—Frees Association. — Copyright. Received 9.56 a.m. OTTAWA, Thursday. PARLIAMENT was opened at three o’clock this afternoon I with shovels. Sixteen inches of snow fell yesterday, and was followed by a temperature below zero. Greater pomp than ever marked the ceremony. The Governor-General, Viscount Willingdon, read the Speech from the Throne.
Lady Willingdon and party were on the left of the Throne. Many nations were represented by their respective consuls. For the first time a Minister from the United States was present, and Mr. L. S. Amery was a spectator. Mr. R. B. Bennett, the new Tory leader, was in his place. A debate on the Australian treaty is expected, following on the attack made yesterday by Mr. G. W. Tovell, president of the Manitoba Dairymen’s Association, who said that large quantities of Australian butter at the winter price made Canadian competition difficult. The increased bounty enabled the Australian product to be delivered in Vancouver "at a transportation cost of three cents a pound, at a total cost of 36 cents, a pound. The transporation cost to prairie producers of three cents made competition on a parity. No reference was made in the Speech from the Throne to Australia, but trade treaties between Canada and “certain foreign countries” will be submitted to Parliament.
