SMOKE OBSCURES SIGNALS

Passengers on the Limited from Wellington yesterday saw the effects of the fires w'hich are burning through the Waikato district and along the Main Trunk line. From Te Kuiti as far north as Ngaruawahia the country is covwith a dense pall of smoke which stretches for many miles toward the sea coast. The abserrde of wind keeps the smoke almost stationary, thereby adding to the amazing atmospheric effect. When the Limited pulled out of Frankton Junction this morning to continue her journey to Auckland, she went very slowly as the smoke was so thick that it was impossible to see the signals.
