MAORIS RETURNING FROM TANGI DOCTORS HURRY TO THE SCENE ONE man was killed, six seriously injured, and eleven slightly hurt, when a motor-lorry went over a bank at Murupara. Its passengers were Maoris returning from a tangi. (From Our Oivn Correspondent)

ROTORUA, To-day. A serious motor accident occurred at 2 o’clock this morning at Murupara, in the Urewera Country, when a party of Maoris were travelling home from a tangi in a light motorlorry. Particulars so far to hand indicate that in taking a bend in the road the steering gear went wrong and the lorry plunged over a bank. It is reported that one of the passengers is dead, six seriously injured and 11 slightly hurt. There were apparently 18 Maoris on the lorry returning from a tangi at

Te Whaiti to Ruatahuna. The accident occurred only 300 yards from Te Whaiti and aid was immediately forthcoming. The vietime were extricated and carried to the meeting-house. One man was found to be dead and all, the others injured—some very seriously. The driver, H. McPherson, suffered a scalp wound, but was able to render aid. Doctors were called up from Rotorua and have proceeded to the scene. Details of the injuries are not yet available.
