FORBURY PARK TROTS
To-Morrow’s Card Reviewed GOOD FIELDS ENSURE KEEN CONTESTS (By “ABAYDOS") THE Forbury Park siummer fixture which opens at Dunedin to-morrow is one of the most important and popular light-harness functions in the South Island. Fields represented by quality as well as quantity will ensure an interesting day’s sport.
The light-harness sport has made good progress in the far South during the last two decades, and the Forbury Park Club has played a prominent part in assisting toward the general advancement. While in the early stages the march forward was of a tedious nature, those associated with the pastime and its welfare were made of the right material, and by' dint of perseverance and energy pushed the trotting chariot along me rocky roads to a more prosperous haveit. The ball will be set in motion with an event confined to pure-gaited horses, the VAUXHALL HANDICAP Of £200; 1 mile 5 furlongs; 4.2 limit "Wattle Patch Lt. Arcotis .... Lt Audalie . . . Lt. All Peters . . Lt. Peter Fashion Lt. Brent Boy . . Lt. Quickfire . .Lt yds. bhd Ruby Bingen Lt. Hawkesbury’s Major Domo . Lt. Pride .... 36 Deceitful ... Lt. Peter Boy . . 4S Horatio . . . Lt. Len Wood . . 72 A good field will go to the post in this heat, and with the exception of three, all will be off the front. Several among the latter brigade are possibilities, and Peter Fashion, who was showing some form on the West Coast, will be in demand. Quickfire is also included in the field, but Peter should turn the tables on his Trotting Stakes vietpr of last year. Major Domo is an experienced stager and this will stand to him. Arctotis was in the boom last season, and despite severed failures good judges say he is the real mackie.” In the rearguard Peter Boy, if on his best behaviour will make it interesting and Len Wood is a solid and improving sort. ARCTOTIS, PETER BOY and LEN WOOD may get most support. There is a big contingent in the next event, which gives those who prefer the weight on top a chance to show their prowess. It is the ELECTRIC HANDICAP (Saddle) Of £250; 1 mile; 2.17 limit Marinca . . . Lt. yds. bhd Lucky Dillon . Lt. High Jinks . . 12 Pointalena . . Lt. Lingfield ... 12 Omaha a . . . Lt. General ... 24 yds. bhd Mountain Locanda Chimes . . . 36 General ... 12 Several promising milers appear on the front of this heat, and there are also a few who could make no race of it if they decided to do their best. In this category are Pointalena and Sahib, both of whom have speed to burn. Of the more reliable type- are Manrica and Kate Thorpe, but they may all be held safe by High Jinks and Lingfield, who are just behind them. The latter is an improving pacer and should reach a high standard this season. Firpo is another “iffy” proposition, but Desert Star, Jean McElwyn, and Queen’s General must all be treated with respect. The. latter is a great miler when on the job and may finish in front of her companions. Mountain Chimes raced consistently at National time and was unlucky bumping up against Author Jinks at his best. In a good pool LINGFIELD, QUEEN’S GENERAL, and MOUNTAIN CHIMES may be the elect. Trotters are again given a chance to earn a crust in the MUSSELBURGH HANDICAP Of £225; 2 miles; 4.50 limit Pieter Timmer- yds. bhd tuan .... Lt. Sea Queen . 24 Fairlight . .". Lt. Sarsaparilla . . 36. Lsn "Wood . . Lt. Randolph . . 48 Avalanche . . Lt. Little Johnnie 48 Peter the First Lt. Swiftbine . . 72 Our Lady . . 120 Pieter Timmerman, who threatened to come back to his former palmy days, is one on the end that might create a surprise, but Fairlight on holiday form looks a more solid proposition. Len Wood is also on the front, and if reserved for this event will make things interesting for all and sundry. Sea Queen is a good mare when right, and it looks as if she is finding the right key, while Sarsaparilla, now that he has become more solid, will make some of the others want to quench their thirst before the box is reached. Little Johnnie will arrive just when he pleases, while Swiftbine has something to recommend him. When a selection is made, SEA QUEEN, FAIRLIGHT and SARSAPARILLA may be in most demand. There will be a general stampede to the birdcage ringside to see the classy customers parade for the
recommendation for the event at Dunedin. Dundas Boy was coming forward during the holiday carnival and can be expected to run a good race. Firebrand is the goods and will make things pretty warm on the journey, and Royal Authoress has enough speed ta beat the best of them. Further back that good colt Nelson McElwyn catches the eye, but he may be just a shade too far back to catch the eye of the man in the box. Most support may. be found for DON DERBY, FIREBRAND and DUNDAS BOY. Once again square-gaiters are given the preference, and this time the crack-a-jacks. in this department will try conclusions in the OTAGO CUP Of £425; 2 miles; 4.39 limit Duke Bingen Lt. yds. bhd Our Lady . . Lt. Cannonball . 24 Blue Thorpe . Lt. Little Logan . 24 Petroleuse .. Lt. John Mauritius GO yds. bhd Eizear ... 60 Clonmel ... 12 Trampfast . . 10S Engagement . 12 Some high-class trotters are billed to measure strides in this event, including Blue Thorpe, who brought off a big surprise by annexing the cup last year. He has not done anything this season, but will be kept in mind by many who saw the performance 12 months ago. Duke Bingen off the front is sure to go well, and Petroleuse, if dressed in her best, will keep the lot busy. Clonmel is a possibility, but Engagement is on a handy mark, and will probably beat all those round about her. If Cannonball can reproduce the form which put him in the boom at the beginning of the season, the Reef ton- owned horse should get some of the prize-money. Little Logan will not disgrace himself in such company, and John Mauritius is always likely to upset calculations. But what of Elzear? Tomkinson’s mare is a real speed merchant, and only needs to begin right to make it no race. Trampfast, although well back, will be knocking when it comes to the finish, and perhaps the public will fancy ELZEAR, ENGAGEMENT, TRAMPFAST. Hopples will be brought into requisition again when the contestants are being got ready for the KING GEORGE HANDICAP Cft £275; 2 miles; 4.42 limit Lucky Dillon Lt. yds. bhd Logan Hanlon Lt. Seine Wilkes 12 Okoura . . . Lc. Transport . . 12 Liberal . . . Lt. But there are several close to the end that will be troublesome, including Jackie Audubon, Vesuvius and La Sonette. The latter showed fine form at Greymouth, an did the other two, but on Coast forrr Vesuvius would receive most support.
DUNEDIN CUP Of £725; 2 miles; 4.32 limit Jolly Chimes Lt. . yds. bhd Harry Audubon Lt. Golden Devon 12 WiLiam the Bonny Logan . 36 Great . . . . Lt. Concliff e . . . 36 Downcast . . . Lt. Terence Dillon 36 Login Holm . Lt. Logan Park . 48 yds. bhd Machine Gun . 48 St. Maura . . 12 Dainahine . . S 4 Silk Thread .. 12
Fourteen colour the card in this important contest, but the betting field will be reduced through several brackets. Of the quintette on the front of the handicap, William the Great, a young pacer with pretensions to class, will probably appeal most, although it is reckoned in certain quarters that Logan Holm- will be home ftid dried. So far this chap has only proved his. ability over short courses. St. Maura, who can pull out a solid 10 furlongs at a great rattle, should see the distance out better than those in front and may hold Silk Thread" and Golden Devon safe. But the next trio will cause heart-burnings to some, and it, would not be surprising to see Terence Dillon, Concliff and Bonny Logan, or their bracketed partners, fill the places. Terence is a real horse, and Concliff is showing a pleasing return to his best form. Both may beat Bonny Logan, although she is staying on better now. Logan Park will be on deck, and Dainahine is in rare fettle. Machine Gun if over the effects of the hard campaign at Alexandra Park, will keep them all busy. However the public will prefer the brackets. TERENCE DILLON-DALN AHINE, CONCLIFF - LOGAN PARK, ST. MAURA-BONNY LOGAN. There will be a big field of improving pacers geared up for the next heat, the SOUTHLAND HANDICAP Of £250; 1 mile 5 furlongs; 3.57 J limit Doncliff . . . Lt. yds. bhd Brown Admiral Lt. Royal Spring Flower Lt. Authoress . 36 Vchalone . . Lt. John Logan . 36 fieal Light . . Lt. Free Lance . 48 Don Derby . . Lt. Eibiringi . 48 Wilkie Bard . Lt. Warepa ... 60 Dundas Boy . Lt. Nelson Mcyds. bhd Elwyn .... 72 Firebrand . . 24 Nelson Fay . 84 Drake ... 24 Great Form . 84 Red Swithin . 24 The front row will introduce some real good young ones, and with Don Derby, Dundas Boy and Brown Ad - miral those in the rear divisions will be required to do their best, and per - haps a bit more. Don Derby wa.s looked upon as a suitable rival for Daphne de Oro in the Derbies, but did not start. This should be sufficient
Hector’s Own is a useful customer and Panto has struck form and should go on getting the money. Huon Denver must not be overlooked, and Acre :s such a promising pacer he is sure to be somewhere handy near the finish. The dual Derby winner, Daphne de Oro, is the back-marker, and she car - not be left out of the reckoning. VESUVIUS, ACRE and PANTO may receive most support. The curtain will be rung down on the first day’s sport with the FLYING HANDICAP Of £300; 1 mile; 2.16 limit Lord Bingen Lt. yds. bhd Diamond Child Lt. Desert Star . 3 i Granite City . Lt. Bob Logan . 2< Lochree . . . Lt. i'ouside ... Zt yds. bhd Harold Burwcod 3 5 Event . . . . 12 Breutloc ... 45 Jean Me- I ogan Park . 4 > Elwyn , . . 12 There is a good selection here ar.d betting should take a wide range, although there need not be much douot as to what will be the actual favour-' ite. Lochree is on the end, but this speedy miler has not had a race fur a while, and Lord Bingen will appeal better than those from the limit mark. Event can. scamper if in the humoi r, and Desert Star and Jean McElwyn are a likely pair. Bob Logan has been threatening to lift the thick end of a wallet for some time, and is opportunity may now be at hand. Har-
old Burwood, now that he has tasted the sweets of victory, might carry on the good work, and Brentloc has whips of speed and will receive solid support. But Logan Park is nicely placed and will be the toughest for the opposition to dispose of. When it is summed up publicly the order may be LOGAN PARK, HAROLD BURWOOD and 808 LOGAN.
