OPIUM SMUGGLER HEAVILY FINED
PENALTY OF £SO “The amount brought over by this man is more than usual. It is these people who are the real source of trouble,” said Mr. Penn, Collector of Customs, at the Police Court this morning when John Corrin (42) pleaded guilty to a charge of smuggling opium into New Zealand. Mr. Penn said the accused was a seaman on the Ulimaroa and yesterday was found to have nearly 21b of prepared opium in his possession. It was in £lb. tins and was about £l2 a tin. The migistrate imposed a fine of £SO and costs.
