GIRL GUIDES’ CORNER

A large number of visitors journeyed to Puhunui last Saturday afternoon to inspect the camp of the Kakamai and Naumai Companies, where 30 Guides and officers are spending a delightful holiday under canvas. Miss D. E. Gillett, Captain; Miss H. M. Whittaker, Lieutenant; Miss R. Innes, Lieutenant, and Mrs. Kildare, Camp Mother, are in charge of the Kakamai girls, while Miss G. is captaining the visiting Guides from Northern Wairoa.

The advance party entered camp on Thursday, January 12, and made preparations for the arrival of the camping party proper, which took place on the following day. Visitors’ Day saw the camp in perfect order, and a happy party of girls dispensing tea in the shade of the belt of pines which shelters the camp. The tents were thr-.h inspected, the fireplace which is complete with a chimney, the corner for stores where some camp-made jam was in process of setting, and at length the guests made their way to the swimming pool to watch the girls enjoying their afternoon bathe. Qn a slight rise is the camp-fire site, with the trefoil cleverly modelled in pine cones, and here the Guides intend holding a camp-fire evening which people from the surrounding district will attend. On Thursday, January 26, a Fancy Dress Carnival will take place, and the camp will break up the following day. The store tent is in the capable hands of Miss Innes, who is to be congratulated on the up-to-date way in which it is run. *• * * The combined camp of St. Mary’s, St. Mark’s and St. Francis’s Companies of Guides, which was held at Papakura, broke up yesterday and the girls returned to their homes after having spent a happy and instructive holiday at their well conducted “Canvas Town.” * * * Fluttering Leaf, a Patrol Leader in St. John’s Company, Ponsonby, writes that the Company intends setting out on a hike to Glen Eden on Monday; January 30. The girls will leave Auckland at 7 a.m. and a happy day is anticipated.
