Sweep the Board!
Liquor Off the Table When Conviviality Ends The laws of New Zealand, will always have their critics. On Saturday evening Mr. W. H. Prentis, president of the Auckland Commercial Travellers * and Warehousemen's 'Association, told an inquiring member that the licensing laws prevented a revival of the annual dinner at the club * “Under existing laws,” he said, “the dinner must be finished by 8 o’clock, when all liquor has to be removed from the tables. It makes the dinner a farce, and until the licensing laws are altered no dinner can be a success.” An instance in which a law has affected the club’s revenue has been furnished by the Summer Time Bill, which has caused evening play at the billiard tables to be greatly reduced. In addition the club dropped revenue, for the year just closed, on its bar takings, but picked it up through improved business in the dining room. .
