LEVEL CROSSINGS
MOTORISTS’ VIEW APPALLING LOSS OF LIFE NEW SIGNAL DEVICE “The loss of life at level crossings is appalling, and our duty is to do everything we can to avoid these accidents.” This was the attitude of the Automobile Association Council last evening on the subject. The matter of level crossings was introduced by a letter from Wanganui drawing attention to a new level crossing signalling device patented by Mr. Arthur Pearson. On appearances this device in shape resembles the cross-bones in the familiar skull and cross-bones design. Two wooden arms painted white are crossed, and on being set in motion revolve in opposite directions, the four ends each striking a gong once in every revolution. At night each of the arms contains a red light. According to the Wanganui Association the effect is considerably more noticeable than the Avig-wag signal, and has been favourably commented on by the Railway Department. The association decided to ask the department to try out the signals in Auckland, and, on the suggestion of Mr. Wynyard, also decided to ask the department if it would confer with the association as representing the main users 'of level crossings, on warning devices and the crossings on Avhich they should be put.
