An Open Air Page

For Big Girls and Boys

HOMECOMING

“•EE, Redfeather, I bring you gifts of poetry from the way- " side where the wind loiters to listen to the birdsong and the feet of life pass leisurely by.” “Then I shall call you Wayside Flower, for the spirits of the earth and the air have blessed you and given you a magic message to speed the traveller on his way. There is no rarer gift than the fashioning of words and no rarer voice than that which speaks with the wisdom of the wayside. .. . Hark! I hear a great clamour at the door of the Wigwam. The children are returning from their hunting and they bring many tales of the river and the forest. In far places have their tepees been pitched, but now they gather to exchange delighted pow-wow. Ah, the face of Singing Arrow is in their midst . . . Glistening Spear has ‘folded his tents like the Arabs’ . . . Black Wolf is again coming down the trail . . . And from far camps comes news of Silver Ripple and Silver Dove. Shining Feather, the maker of pictures, is again bending over her work. Little Swift Canoe arrives in the wake of Whispering Night. Silver Wing and Twinklefoot are again with ns, and, on the noiseless moccasins of fidelity, comes our constant Red Star. Let xis go forth to greet them that the hand of goodfellowship may again pass between us for the fires of yonth burn brightly in their hearts and as yet the night is young.”
