deceived 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Tuesday. rSTTER CHARLES ROGERS, the most spectacular art impostor of the century, has been gaoled for a year for forgery of relics of famous men.
tie obtained considerable notoriety ** by claiming to have dug up gjjjbespearean relics and treasures in a garden of Warwickshire. Hi* humble cottage at Slough was narked with Shakespearean manuscript, his marriage certificate, and eren'cloaks alleged to have been worn at his theatrical performances. Experts were induced to visit and inspect the collection.
One after another they pronounced the articles as forgeries, though they were so clever that it took time to arrive at definite conclusions.
Nevertheless Rogers persisted, and continued to gather together collections of relics of Milton, Penn, Gray, and many others, pursuing his strange hobby until he found himself in gaol to-day.—A. and N.Z.
