MENTAL HOSPITAL AT PATUMAHOE
GOOD PROGRESS MADE
The preparations fo.r establishing a mental hospital at Pukitahi, near Patumahoe, where the Health Department intends developing a model institution to eventually supersede the existing Auckland Mental Hospital, show substantial progress. On his return from a visit of inspection yesterday, the Minister- of Health, the Hon. J. A. Young, stated that in about a month accommodation would be available for 20 patients, who would be drawn from the Auckland institution. As the accommodation was increased that institution would be further relieved, though it would probably, be some years before the new hospital entirely superseded the Auckland institution. .
The department acquired the property of approximately 650 acres, with homestead and outbuildings, in September and since then -workmen have been engaged in modernising and adopting the buildings, while preliminary work on the farm, including extensive drainage and improvements to th© access by road, has been attended to.
In occupation is a permanent staff of an officer in charge, an assistant and three farm hands and the stock already on the farm includes about 90 pows, a large number of young cattle and a dozen horses.
