LONDON MARKETS
OFFICIAL RESUME Under date January 14 the High Commissioner for New Zealand stationed in London cabled the following resume of London markets:— Apples There is a fair demand for good quality apples, but a large quantity of inferior is in the market. Current prices for American sorts are:— Jonathan, 8s to 14s a box. Stayman’ar, Winesap and Delicious, 11s to 14s. Ben Davis and Rome Beauty, 9s to 11s. Oregon Newtown. 15s to 18s. Californian Newtown, 11s to 12s. Wool The Bradford wool market is firmer and prices for tops have advanced. Good business has been done at current rates. Present quotations for tops are: 64’s (Merino), warp, 4s 5d a lb.; average, 4s 4d; 56’s (super halfbred), 3s 3Jd; 50’s, halfbred, 2s sfd; 40’s, prepared. Is IOJd. Anticipate strong opening at London sales next week. Hemp The Manila market is quiet owing to the absence of demand. “J” grade, Jan-uary-March shipment, sold at £4l 10s, and Is now quoted at £4l. The sisal market is irregular and occasionally weaker. Spot and nearby is difficult to sell. January-March shipments are quoted at No. 1, £36 15s to £37, and No. 2, £35 10s. The market for New Zealand hemp is quiet and values are easier, closing at highpoints £34 10s. fair £32 ss, and common £3l 15s. Tow: Second grade, £2l; third grade, £l9, for January-March shipments. Tallow The spot tallow market is firm and moderate business has been done for shipment. Present quotations are:— Mutton: Fine, 43s per cwt.; fair to good, 39s to 40s 6d; dark to dull, 36s 6d to 37s 6d. Beef: Suet and/or mixed, 40s to 425; fair to good. 38s to 39s 6d; dark to dull, 35s 6d to 36s 6d. Mixed: Fair to good. 37s 6d to 39s 6d; fair to dull, 35s 6d to 36s fid. Gut, etc.* 34e 6d to 56* 9d,
