At the first meeting of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science it was announced that the Mueller Medal for research had been awarded to Dr* • Leonard Cockayne, F.R.S., for his'researches in New Zealand botany, extending over a period of 25 years, and- published chiefly in the transactions of the New Zealand Institute. t It was decided that the next meeting of the Science Congress be held at Brisbane in May, 1930. Mr. E. C. Andrews, of Sydney, was chosen presi-dent-elect of that congress.—A. and N.Z.

Dr. Cockayne is honorary botanist to the New Zealand State Forest Service. He is 72 years of age. He started a private experimental station near Christchurqh in 18.82, . introducing thousands of orchard trees, shrubs and herbs, and since 1888 he has devoted all his time to research, oil the flora, and vegetation of New Zealand* including the Chatham and subAntarctic islands. He has carried out many important researches, and the Mueller Medal adds another distinction to an already large list, including a Ph.D. degree of the Munich University in 1903, Lord Kelvin being the only other Englishmen then enjoying that honour.
