WHANGAREI PARK TREES DESTRUCTION OPPOSED (From Our Own Correspondent) WHANGAREI, To-day. A deputation consisting of Messrs, madman,-T. Dent, r>. A . McLean and W. A. Carruth, being three exMayors and the senior solicitor of the borough waited on the Whangarei Gounod last night to oppose the council s proposal to cut down a group of pmus insignis in the south-west corner of Kensington Park. The park is borough property and the rendezvous of racing, football, sports, A. and P shows, military camps and demonstrations. The deputation stressed the shelter and beauty of the trees, which are 50 years old. and people viewed their removal with distress. The chairman of the parks committee, Cr. L. W. Nelson, said he yielded to no man or men in the earnest desire to make the park beautiful, and the committee had been guided purely by the desire to replace the pines with deciduous and native trees of more suitable character and beauty, as in Hagley Park. They had taken expert advice and it would be an entire misconception to suppose they contemplated an act of mere vandalism. The Mayor supported the parks committee, but moved that the council undertake to do nothing further till it reconsiders the proposal and obtains additional expert advice, and this course was agreed to.
