Smith (Ponsonby) .. .. 5-56 Vk % ?($ : A did innings during which he hit eight fours and gave two royal chances at 32 and 66, but the fieldsmen didn’t want them; they were so easy. Clean, straight hitting was the feature of Lyon’s innings. Elliott compiled his 35 with good hitting after a wellplayed innings. The constant change of bowling did not affect him, and it was when he Appeared set for a week that he hit a ball into Turvey’s hands at second slip. Wells came in, but retired after making four through receiving a fast ball full on the wrist. Itiddolls came and 90 went up after an hour and 35 minutes. He was then caught behind th© wicket by Horspool when two. Miller joined Lyon, and this was the partnership of the day, the pair bringing the total to 200 after two hours 15 minutes. Miller gave a dashing display and was the only batsman to really open out and driv© the balls. He hit a beautiful six and several fours. After Lyon had been caught, Peoppel joined Miller and had time to make four before stumps. There is no doubt that Y.M.C.A. was responsible for a more finished exhibition, and its lead with only four wickets down seems to leave a hopeless task for Grafton, judging by the opening display.
