PLUCKY AND BRAVE PRIME MINISTER’S TRIBUTE
“CHIPS OF THE OLD BLOCK” (THE SUN’S Special Representative) WHANG ARE I, To-day. While speaking at the jubilee celebrations of the Whangarei County at Whangarei yesterday afternoon of the splendid work of the pioneers, the Prime Minister, the Right Hon. J. G. Coates, paid a tribute to the men who made a gallant attempt to fly the Tasman. “A feeling of regret must pass through our minds at this moment,” he said, “and that is of the plucky and brave attempt to fly the Tasman. The difficulties and dangers of the flight were realised by those responsible for the ambitious le at, and we can only hope and pray That everything is well. “The Government has left all arrangements in the hands of the Minister of Defence, who has organised his airplanes and all means of communications. We hope these will be of some use. “Those boys who made the flight are chips of the old block,” Mr. Coates concluded, referring to the pioneers who had paved the way to the present conditions in New Zealand.
