BRITAIN DEFENDS RECORD By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. LONDON, January 3. The American authorities have chivalrously agreed to permit Captain Malcolm Campbell, the British motorist, to compete in the triangular contest at Daytona, Florida, in February, the object of which is to break Major Segrave’s speed record. He will make his attempt after the American runs, and thus will have the advantage of knowing the speed necessary to retain Britain’s record. Captain Campbell’s motor resembles a giant projectile, the driver being covered in, except his eyes and the top of his head. A fin is fitted at the rear of the machine to ensure directional stability. The engine develops 900 h.p., and is a replica of that used in the airplane with which Lieutenant Webster won the Schneider Cup. It is still on the Air Ministry’s secret list, and only the Air Force mechanic accompanying Captain Campbell will be permitted access to its interior.
