SHEIKS OF ARABY
BACK TO CHILDHOOD A charming masquerade party was given to a few friends by Mrs. R. West at her home in Remuera last evening. The hostess, when she i*eceived her guests, wore a quaint little gown of Mary-blue taffeta with a frilly skirt and huge sash of the kind we used to wear on our best-est party frocks. She was representing “Little Miss Muffet,” she told us, but she looked just like any little doll out of a very nice toyshop, with her golden curls falling from under her shady little sun bonnet. The guests came as sheiks of Araby, harlequins and columbines, pierrots in black and white, in green stripes, and in various other frolicsome mixtures, and a number of the Bright Young People represented the Back to Childhood Movement. The members of the sterner sex among them wore weird and wonderful jumpers and shorts with broad-brimmed white sailor hats turned up all round. The girls wore the most breath-takingly abbreviated skirts, socks, a small amount of frilly bodice and the most up-to-date of dancing shoes. An orchestra was ensconced in a shady corner of the long veranda and provided a splendid selection of dance music, and in between times competitions, including an amusing peanuthunt in the garden occupied the.guests. Bridge was attempted in the drawing room, which was gay with clusters of balloons and streamers, but the noisier element at the party insisted that so serious a game should not be indulged in . . .mo, not even “one rub!” So it wasn’t! BRIDGE PARTY Mrs. Morris, of Herne Bay, was the hostess at a bright little bridge party last evening, given in honour of Mrs. Watson McCarthy, of Chrischurch, who is staying with her. Six tables were in play and bridge prizes were won by Mrs. E. Kelly and Mr. B. Dawson. Mrs. Morris wore an attractive gown of black embossed georgette when receiving her guests, and had a large rose shoulder posy. The rooms were delightfully decorated with sweet peas in pastel tones and tall vases of larkspur decked the daintily arranged supper tables.
