BRIGHT CRICKET

CANTERBURY TOURISTS AT HAMILTON READ AND NEWMAN BAT WELL (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, To-day. The Canterbury touring cricket team started a two-day match against Waikato yesterday. Batting first, the home team opened well, but the innings Slumped in the middle stages, and Waikato was all out for 184. Canterbury opened poorly, but a fine partnership by Read and Newman recovered the position. * S. A. R. Badeley and E. Kavanagh opened the batting for Waikato. Badeley shaped confidently, and with forceful driving began to settle down to the bowling, while Kavanagh, although he started cautiously, soon seemed at ease. Badeley hit out freely, and got to 42 before he was smartly caught by Jacobs behind the wickets in an attempt to hit an off ball from Newman, before whom he was uncomfortable. Kavanagh ran down the pitch to hit one of Merritt’s deliveries, and, missing, had a narrow escape from being stumped by Jacobs. Badeley’s wicket fell with the score at 68, and Hawke replaced ; him. Kavanagh, who had played a good innings for 34, was clean-bowled later by Read, while D. Hawke succumbed to Newman for 20, the batting being carried to 113 for the loss of three wickets. Senior replaced 1 Hawke, and after careful batting fell a victim to Reid’s bowling. Hemus went cheaply for seven runs, and the score was 117—5 —8. WICKETS FALL RAPIDLY Winger filled the vacancy, but before ho had scored he was caught at square-leg by Page off Merritt, while Pomeroy was dismissed for five in a similar manner to Badeley, being caught behind the wickets by Jacobs off the fast bowling of Newman. The score stood at 121 for seven wickets. Thomas was next in. Wilson was bowled by Merritt after he had made six. Two of the tail-enders, Thomas and Heyworth, made a good stand for the ninth wicket, and the innings closed for 184. Canterbury opened erratically, losing the first three wickets for 47 runs. Then Read and Newman became associated, and by bright cricket added nearly a hundred runs to the score. When stumps were drawn for the day, the pair were still together, and Canterbury had scored 138 for three wickets. Details:-*—
