CORNWELL CUP CONTEST

COMPETING CREWS ARRIVE ENTERTAINING THE VISITORS Crews representing Otago and Lyttelton arrived this morning, to take part in the Cornwell Cup contest, the first race of which will be sailed on Saturday at 2 p.m. It is expected the other crews will be here by to-morrow or Friday morning. It is certain that eight ports will be represented, and this number constitutes a Dominion record. There were nine, but Christchurch has withdrawn. The Entertainment Committee and other committees met last evening in the clubhouse, Bayswater. Final reports showed that arrangements are well forward. A reception to the visiting crews will be tendered by the Takapuna Borough Council in the council chambers on Friday evening. The following boats will be used in the several racae:—Arfhana, Comet, Delphine, Frolic, Kitty, Hai Hai, Tio and Trevic. The boats were all put into the water to-day, and by Saturday will be tightened up and in racing trim. Drawing for the yachts for the first round will take place on Friday afternoon, when the conference of delegates will be held. The sails are provided by the visiting crews, and will be measured before being fitted to the boats. Delegates representing the contending ports are: Messrs. Gillies (Hawke’s Bay), Duncan (Wellington), Collins (Lyttelton), Bewley (Otago), Wilson (Manukau), Pickmero (Whangarei). Carter (Tauranga), and O. Moller (Auckland). Free passes have been issued to the 35 visitors by the Devonport Ferry Company, and offers of entertainment free of charge have been made by the management of Luna Park, the Majestic and Lyric Theatres, Auckland, and the Picturedrome and Green Mill picture houses, Milford.

In addition, harbour and motor trips have been arranged, and everything possible will be done to make the visitors’ stay a pleasant one.
