Old Man’s Death,— The death has occurred at Jerusalem on the Wanganui River, of Whetu, a Maori, who had topped his century. He was the oldest native on the river.
Damage by Fires.— Swamp and scrub fires in the Waikato are doing mucji damage. Valuable feed and chains upon chains of fences have been destroyed. Flax areas have so far been protected.
Fall Over Bank.— A motor-delivery van driven by a youth named C. McMahon, fell 60ft over a bank at Taihape. The vehicle, turned several somersaults, but McMahon escaped with minor injuries.
Grass Fire at Mount Eden. —Several houses in Nicholson Park Mount Eden. were threatened by a grass fLre which broke out a little after noon yesterday. Little damage was dons.
A Cheeky Act.—A man named Edward Wilson, who made use of a motor-cycle owned by a fellow boarder without permission, thinking he would not object was fined 30s at Hamilton to-day.
Haystack Burnt, —A haystack was burnt and several fence posts destroyed when a fire broke out yesterday afternoon on a reserve next to the Veterans’ Home Mount Roskill. The local fire brigade had some difficulty in extinguishing the flames.
Window Broken.— Edward Ernest Green who pleaded guilty at the Police Court to-day to a charge of breaking a window at £5, was ordered to pay the amount of the damage. For fighting in a public place he was fined £l .
