WELFARE OF CHILDREN

TWO WOMEN JUSTICES AUCKLAND APPOINTMENTS The announcement is made of the appointment of Mrs. N. E. Ferner and Miss S. E. Jackson, of Auckland, as special justices of the peace under the Child Welfare Act. When the Children’s Court was constituted in April, 1925, Mrs. Ferner was appointed an associate, and in that capacity could only sit in an advisory position. With the appointment as special justices Mrs, Ferner and Miss Jackson will be empowered to preside over the Court when necessary. At’ present Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., and Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., are the only two with authority to preside over such courts. Mrs. Ferner has long been associated with welfare work, and has done much to further the interests of children and others in Auckland. Miss Jackson, who recently retired from the position of matron at the Mount Albert ludustrial Home after many years’ experience, has a wide knowledge of welfare work.
