DEATH OF MAORI WAR VETERAN
MR. W. D. FENTON (Special to THE SUN.) WANGANUI, Tuesday. The ranks of the Maori War veterans have been further redjiiced by the death of Mr. William Dart Fenton, who has died at the age of 89 years. He came out from England when a young man and during the Maori troubles of 1863 he joined the First Waikato Regiment, rising to the rank of sergeant. Early in 1868 Mr. Fenton joined No. 5 Company of the Armed Constabulary Force, the company, which was commended by the late Major Von Tempsky, and again he was promoted to sergeant. In May, 1868, the company was sent from the Waikato to this coast and took up duties at the Waihi redoubt n-*ar Hawera. About 16 years ago Mr. Fenton settled in Wanganui. Mr. Fenton was in good circumstances and his estate is to go to charitable purposes. the Presbyterian Orphanage being among the beneficiaries. He was not married and had no relatives in the Dominion.
