GOLDEN WEDDING
AVONDALE CELEBRATION The fiftieth anniversary of their wedding- has just been celebrated by Mr. and Mrs. 'William Johnston, of Manuka'll Road, Avondale. Mr. Johnston is 73 years of age. He was born at. Stewarton, Ayrshire, Scotland, and married in 1877 Miss Catherine Blair, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Blair, of Glasgow. Mr. and Mrs. Johnston arrived in New Zealand 16 years ago, with their daughter, Miss Agnes Johnston, and their two sons, William and Andrew, in 1913. Prior to coming to reside at Avondale four years ago they lived at Clevedon. Both are enjoying good health.
BRIDGE PARTY Mrs. ft. Wilkinson, of The Drive, Epsom, save a bright' little bridge party last evening when six tables were In play In her drawing room, which was attractively made gay with bowls of orange and .gold African daisies that provided gay splashes of colour against the handsome background of dark furnishings. Mrs. Wilkinson wore a. charming gown of black georgette trimmed with intricate rhinestone embroidery, and she had a shawl of Roman-striped satin. Among her guests were:— Mrs. Upton, who wore a black sequined ninon frock. Mrs. Sinclair, wearing a frock of powder blue georgette with crystal beading. Mrs. ft. Roberts, in a frock of white georgette with bands of vari-coloured embroidery. Mrs. N. Foster, wearing. hyacinth blue chiffon and sequins. Mrs. McDonnell, in a frock of white tulle, and taffetas. Miss ft. Manning, whose frock was of mignonette green georgette. Miss R. Watson, wearing a picasso red. frock of panne velvet. Miss J. Upton, in a periwinkle blue georgette frock. Miss ft. Murch, who wore geranium red crepe de chine and lace. GIFT AFTERNOON FOR BRIDE-ELECT Miss Flora Stacey, of Gisborne, whose wedding takes place shortly, was the guest of honour at a gift afternoon given bj; Miss Peggy Carr at her home in Epsom yesterday afternoon. Miss Carr received her guests in a gown of cinnamon brown tricolette, made in jumper fashion and trimmed with bands of beige embroidery. Miss Stacey wore an attractive frock of floral patterned ninon in which the predominant colours were delft blue and geranium red. The house was delightfully decorated with tall vases of stephanotis, and sweet peas with large bowls of blue hydrangeas in the reception hall. During the afternoon a number of musical and elocutionary items were given and much amusement was caused by a number of competitions. A large number of attractive and useful presents were given to Miss Stacey, who, in a graceful little speech, expressed her gratitude and appreciation of the charming tribute. If table and duchess runners are starched rather stiffly they will not soil half as quickly as when only slightly starched.
