GRASS FIRES NUMEROUS

SAFETY MEASURES ADOPTED Grass fires still continue to be numerous, but are causing little damage. Steps to prevent a blaze on Mount Victoria have been taken by the Devonport Borough Council, which is destroying the dry fennel and grass which is over 6ft high on some slopes. This is being burned off slowly, the flames being carefuly kept under control. A grass fire in Arthur Street, Onehunga yesterday afternoon threatened two houses and gave the occupants some anxious moments. It was beaten out by the local brigade before any damage could be done. The Mount Albert Brigade extinguished a blaze in Malvern Road yesterday.
