PIG MARKETING
SOUND PROGRESS REPORTED THE FIRST POOL (Froni Our Otcn Correspondent) HAMILTON, To-day. The activities of the New Zealand Co-Operative Pig Marketing Association are extending rapidly and supplies are coming forward from as far away as Te Kawa in the south and Kumeu in the north and Opotiki in the east. The Government is to meet exporting firms at an early date to arrive at a satisfactory method of apportioning the subsidy of £3,000. The New Zealand Co-operative Association is not yet in a position to majce a statement concerning the effect of the subsidy on the position or its suppliers, but is fully protecting their interests. December 31 saw the close of the first pool in which 600 pigs were handled, the bulk being shipped to the United Kingdom. The association reports satisfactory sales of a considerable portion of pigs in the pool, but it will be some time before the final realisation can be ascertained as considerable numbers of the pigs were shipped on consignment. The association has advanced 3d a. lb on porkers and 2d a lb on baconers, making an advance payment of £5,700 on all pigs in the pool. The second pool will cover January only. The advance payment for this period has not been fixed as the association is awaiting the results of the conference with the Government. The association is putting through about 1,500 pigs weekly and has a membership of 20 dairy companies. It is anticipated that by the end of January it will be handling 3,000 pigs weekly.
