NEW AUSTRALIAN TARIFF
AMERICANS ENTER PROTEST By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. NEW YORK, Saturday. A large number of inquiries and protests have been received by the local Australian Customs Office from American manufacturers as a result of the proposed Australian tariff revisions. The piano manufacturers, particularly those exporting an instrument to Australia that sells approximately for £4O f.0.b., say the new duties will practically double the cost of this piano, and will virtually prevent its export. They moreover protest against the imposition of larger rates on piano parts. They stress the point that, while Australia manufactures pianos, she does not make parts. The silk stocking and gramophone disc manufacturers are among those making inquiries. The latter complain that there will be a doubling of prices as a result of the new duties.—A. and N.Z.
