NEW GOVERNOR WON DISTINCTION IN WAR By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. LONDON, Saturday. Major-General the Honourable Alexander Hore-Ruthven has been appointed Governor of South Australia, in place of Sir Tom Bridges, who is retiring.—A. and N.Z. Major-General Hore-Ruthven was born in 1872, and is the second son of Baron Ruthven. He joined the Highland Light Infantry in 1891, and was attached to the Egyptian Army in the Sudan in 1898. He was at the battle of Gedaref and subsequent operations, and won the Victoria Cross. From 1905 to 1906 he was military secretary to the Viceroy of Ireland, and was military secretary to the Gover-nor-General of the Commonwealth in 1908. He served in the European War, in France and Gallipoli, and was severely wounded and won the Distinguished Service Order and bar.
