STOLE £5
AGED EX-MAYORESS A former Mayoress of Accrington, England, Mrs. Emily Dewhurst, was fined £25 at Accrington for stealing money given for poppies on Armistice Day. She is 72 years old. The Bench said they had decided, because of her advanced age, not to send her to prison. While the money which had been collected for Earl Haig’s Fund was being counted on Armistice Day, Mrs. Dewhurst was seen to pul a silver coin into pocket of a cardigan she wore. When challenged by other women in the room £ 5 3s, all in silver, was found in her lap. Mrs. Dewhurst’s counsel said that by her lapse she had ruined her career. As a guardian and a member of several committees for hospitals and the poor she had a record of public service without rival in the town, but she had now relinquished all her public appointments. Medical evidence was called to show, that Mrs. Dewhurst had been suffering from strain through nursing her husband, an alderman and county councillor, and that three years ago, she had been treated for an injury to her head.
