TAIL WAGS
WELLINGTON’S BIG SCORE AGAINST OTAGO BADCOCK’S BRILLIANT CENTURY (Special to THE SUN.) WELLINGTON, Sunday. In the special match between Wellington and Otago, the visitors resumed batting, with four down for 157 in reply to Wellington’s first innings’ total of 363. The weather was hot and sultry when Cherry (57) and A. W. Alloo (50) went out to bat. Cherry was dismissed soon after the start. He and Alloo had added 107 for the fifth wicket at a critical stage. . Allco did not settle down, either, and with bis departure Otago might still have been dismissed for a very moderate score had not Galland come to light, and flogged the Wellington bowling to all points of the compass. BREEZY CRICKET Galland gave the brightest display of the match. He hit one sixer and eight fours. Eastman was unable to bat for Otago. With a lead of 94 runs on the first innings, Wellington began its second innings just after mid-day. The first
four Wellington batsmen were all dismissed cheaply by Galland’s brilliant work behind the wickets, and it was not till Badcock came in that the Welllington batting looked at all impressive. The coach gave his best display this season, playing dashing cricket for his century. He hit two sixers. The Wellington tail wagged so effectively that the fourth century appeared on the board, the last-wicket partnership between Beard and Massey putting on over 100 runs. Cavanagh filled the , gap, and the scoring slackened down. McMullan lifted one just out of Lambert's reach. A little later Tattersall caught Cavanagh smartly on the.leg-side, off Badcock. 88—3 —10. Alloo was the next man in. A hundred appeared after 78 minutes’ batting, McMullan’s total now standing at 41. J3rice replaced Beard. Badcock was keeping the batsmen thinking. Reaney dropped Alloo off Badcock, but the next over McMullan was caught by McGirr in the slips off Brice—lo6—4—4l. Galland filled the vacancy and played confidently, hitting Badcock for six. Alloo followed with a similar shot and Galland hooked Brice to the boundary twice with successive balls. With the score at 150 Beard and Lambert took a turn with the ball, but the batsmen continued merrily. At the luncheon adjournment the score was 171 for four wickets. Details: OTAGO First Innings.
