ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

HESSEY SHIELD TO AUCKLAND SUCCESSFUL DIVISION It was in 1912 that Mr. John Hessey, J.P., of Masterton gave tangible evidence of his interest in the work of the St. John Ambulance, presenting a shield for annual competition among brigades and divisions of the association throughout the Dominion. This year’s winner of that coveted trophy is the Auckland Division, which follows up its success of November last, when it won the Jones Shield competed for at Auckland. It carried the day against eight teams, topping the list with 77 points. Masterton was second with 75 and Newmarket Railway third with 71. This year marks the biggest competition yet held and the contests were most willing and interesting. The test was held at the Masterton Domain on January 2, under the auspices of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society. Since the presentation of the shield Auckland has competed every year, except in 1919, when there was no competition owing to the influenza epidemic. Auckland has won the shield on five occasions, Masterton on five, Wellington on three, Petone on one. Wellington Harbour Board Division on one and Newmarket Railway Division once.
