INCOME TAX COLLECTION
PREVENTION OF FRAUD A new centralised plan for the collection of income tax is to come into operation this year, says an English exchange. Under it the number of centres from which demand notices will be issued is to be reduced and although the cost at first will be increased it is hoped to effect substantial economies eventually. The scheme will cover the whole of the country outside Greater London and it will be in the nature of a complete reorganisation of the methods of collecting income tax. The new system will start in May at Southampton and will be gradually extended. The object of the plan, which has been adopted on the recommendation of the Public Accounts Committee, is to provide a measure of centralisation for income tax collection, and not the least consideration that has influenced the Treasury in adopting it is the fact that fraud will be made more difficult, is not entirelv prevented. Central district offices are to be set up in various centres. The whole scheme is to be explained in detail in the House of Commons in the near future.
