CHAMPIONSHIP REVIEW

fuiSS CHAMPION’S RECORD By EIGHTBEAT There was something worth seeing at the conclusion of the Auckland swimming championships held in the tepid baths last evening. A high standard was set, and to Miss Edna Champion goes the honour of being the first swimmer this season to establish a new record. She completed the 220yds intermediate girl’s test in 2min 52 2-ssec, or 5 l-ssec better than the previous record. This brilliant young swimmer made a hot pace all the way and in great style covered the distance at a speed which brings her out as one of the finest, if not the best, swimmers of her age in the Dominion, it would seem that Miss Champion will do even better at the New Zealand championships. The big surprise of the evening was the defeat of Miss Ena Stockley by Miss Doris Magee in the 100yds women’s test. This proved a most exciting race, and although the champion of three years in succession made a great effort she could not catch her speedier opponent. Miss Magee, who has been allowing undoubted promise swam a well-judged and liighly-cred-itable race. Although beaten. Miss Stockley has nothing to reproach herself for. She made a game endeavour all the way. There was another surprise in the 220yds women’s test, when Miss D. Grant, always a consistent swimmer, beat Miss Stockley and Miss Bell The winner is to be congrtulated on a fine effort. She was swimming last for about half the distance, and then spurted to the front and went on to win comfortably in great style. Miss i'iri Page, the ex-champion, did not compete. Miss J. Bell swam well, i-»iit s h»> seems to have lost her dash. Gordon Bridson once again showed wha°t he is made of, and annexed the 440vds men’s test in smin 41 d-ssec, 3 ssec slower than the time estab- , . hv A E Baird.
