GREAT SOUTH ROAD
COMPLETING THE GAPS Without a doubt the travelling motorists who have been using the Great South Road in their thousands during the past holidays are indeed thankful to the controlling bodies, who by their foresight decided to discard the metal and instal the long white ribbon, which extends to Papakura with four small breaks at the approaches to bridges, and some idea what the state of the road would have been if left in metal is plainlv illustrated at these points. Although they were all repaired and brought up to date just prior to the holidays, they are at present in very bad condition and will necessitate repair work immediately. The eight chains at the Wiri Bridge are under the Manukau County’s control, and the work of concreting this stretch will commence immediately. The worst part is at the overhead railway bridge at Manurewa, where the Railway Department commenced the work of straightening and widening the bridge. But as no arrangement could be finalised with the town board regarding the allocation of costs, the work was suspended, and at present, although only a short gap, is sufficient to act as a good test for motor-car springs, as it is a succession of pot-holes which cannot possibly be dodged.
