FIRE AT NELSON

SERIOUS LOSSES breeze fans flames Pi *33 Association. NELSON, To-day. Yesterday afternoon two disastrous Urea occurred in Nelson, resulting in hevay losses. At about 1.45 o’clock an outbreak was discovered in Bridge Street and three premises A. E. Davies’s service station, a bulk store belonging to Messrs. Cock and Co., and H. Johnston’s carpentry shop—were totally destroyed. Most of the contents in the latter Place were saved. A fairly strong northerly breeze "as blowing at the time, and the burnlnS debris must have been carried to a Jack of dry timber at the rear of Messrs. Page and Son’s furniture factory in the opposite block in Hardy Shoet, which was found to be on lire l *o hours later. The flames spread with alarming rapidity and the factory and part of the showroom were totally destroyed, together with valuable machinery and rauch stock. The premises of A. G. Betts and Son, Printers, had a very narrow escape, and the damage was mostly confined to st ock by water. Many brigadesmen J ere out of town owing to the holiflays, but they did splendid work. Several other incipient fires were started due to flying debris, and altosether it was rather a hectic afternoon tor Nelsonians.
