The contest for the President's Handicap was a real thriller all the way Kohara £2,628, Jack Potts £ 1,890 aiid the bracketed trio, Escapade, Machine Gun and Sea Pearl £2,100. After one false start they got away to a great send-off, Peterwah and Machine Gun leading past the stands the first time from Escapade, Sea Pearl and Kohara, in close order, with Jewel Pointer, Sheik and Jack Potts following. There was little change in the next lap, but the field was more bunched, Machine Gun and Peterwah being together in the van, with Escapade and Sea Pearl close up, with Kohara, Jewel Pointer, Sheik and Jack Potts following at short intervals. MARTON’S CARD FIELDS WILL BE SMALL PROSPECTS DISCUSSED The Marton meeting opens on Monday and concludes on Tuesday. The acceptances received were good but the scratching pen usually falls heavily after the Christmas racing. The course is reported to be in fine order, ensuring interesting contests. The opening event is the Hurdles, and in this the favourite will be MISTER GAMP and ELYSIANOR. This event will not attract more than half a dozen runners. Riccarton trainer F. D. Jones holds a strong hand in the Juvenile with Arikiwai and First Sight, while Fee Simple, Briar Root and Concentrate raced well on Thursday at Awapuni. ARIKIWAI and BRIAR ROOT are the probable favourites. In the Trial Plate FIRST SIGHT and PLANE will not lack for support, for they have been showing up in their recent engagements. A splendid field of 10 remained in the Marton Cup after the acceptances, and they should provide a good contest. STORMY is on the improve and will be all the better for the racing he had at Awapuni, while another that will be well backed is EUPHONIUM. Three Mainawatu winners in Arikiwai, The Raider and Broad Acre figure in the Dash Hack, and the former pair are now well up. THE RAIDER and BROAD ACRE will be favoured on the day. Kiosk has been withdrawn from his Marton engagements, and this leaves the penalised Arrow Lad at the head of affairs. The North should be worthily represented by Macroom, while others likely are Vast Acre and Duke Abbey. Most favoured may be ARROW LAD and MACROOM. Although she failed at Awapuni, LIMOSA should not be dropped by backers, for she was regarded as o, bit more than unlucky. She may be better fancied than the three-year-old VIGILANCE. The first day’s proceedings close with the Stewards’ Handicap, in which there should be some keen betting between DUKE ABBEY, BEAUMONT and WANDERLUST. Following are the acceptances, showing also the rehandicaps dealt out to recent winners in Arikiwai, Stormy, Novar, Lady Lirnond, The Raider, Broad Acre and Arrow Lad. Concentrate, in the Juvenile, won at Awapuni on Thursday, but as no rehandicap has been announced for this youngster it may be scratched. The following scratchings were reported from Marton last night (these have been taken out of the above list) : All engagements: A nolo. Glen idle, Potoanui, Joy Bird, Irish Lad, Mark Mint and Lady Cynthia. Marton Cup: Kilmiss, Clarinda and Civility. Railway Handicap: Kiosk and Miss Pat. Juvenile Handicap: Concentrate.
