BIG BEN STRIKES FOR COLONIALS
CHRISTMAS BROADCAST Thousands of half-clad wireless fans crouched round loud-speakers early on Sunday morning and listened to a muffled roar which blotted out the greater portion of the transmission of SSW, at Chelmsford, England, which was relayed by IYA and 3YA, in New Zealand, and several Australian stations. The transmission from England started at 3.45 a.m., New Zealand summer time. 3YA opened at 3.30 and broadcast gramophone music for an hour, interspersed with short relays of SSW, mostly of a poor quality. The relay from IYA was almost continuous, but was not a great success owing to interference from power lines. This caused a roar which prevented the music and speech being heard at all clearly. For about 20 minutes listeners heard orchestral music, followed by a woman’s voice in several solos, then, clearly and strength, Big Ben striking four. ' It was then 4.30 a.m. in New Zealand. Radio authorities in Auckland are of the opinion that the transmission took place too late in the morning, and that, had SSW been on the air at the same time as when the Armistice Day programme was broadcast, the result would have been much more satisfactory.
