OHINEMURI COUNTY COUNCIL

SPEEDING IN GORGE A special meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council "was held on Wednesday. Cr. Morris drew attention to motorspeeding through the Karangahake Gorge, pointing out that in consequence of this dangerous practice a serious calamity was narrowly averted the other day. This gorge, on the road from Paeroa to Waihi, is perhaps one of the most dangerous in New Zealand, and that being so motorists should bear in mind that they are running a very serious risk to life and property when they resort to speeding. Many motorists from Auckland, who do not know this dangerous section of the goldfields road, shou(d ‘"‘drive slow” going through to Waihi and Tauranga. They should also keep a careful lookout in wet weather for falling rocks from the high cliffs above. It was agreed that speeding in the gorge was a positive danger to all motor traffic, so why “speed” when danger is so near? The chairman, Cr. JL M- Corbet, extended Christmas and New Year greetings to the councillors, and referred to the work done -during 1927. A special tribute was paid to the clej'K, Ms. R. W. Evan*.
