MAIN HIGHWAYS
SPECIAL BOARD MEETING Mr. P. Keller, resident engineer, presided over a special meeting of the No. 6 Highways Board, held at Taumarunui, and there were present: Messrs Weir (Waitomo County), Potts (Otorohanga), Babbage (Kawhia), W. S. Currie (Ohura), T. H. Crocker (Kaitieke), and G. A. Stanton (Taumarunui). The purpose of the meeting was to consider the declaration of additional highways, which was made possible by the provisions of the Petrol Tax Act. For maintenance on additional highways it is anticipated that approximately 25 per cent, of this tax will be made available, but as the amount to be collected is uncertain, and as there are other factors to be reckoned with, the Highways Council is not yet in a position to indicate the extent of the assistance the counties may look for. The Highways Board carefully considered the various roads the counties submitted, and finally a schedule was prepared for submission to the Main Highways Board. The schedule comprises the roads carrying the heaviest traffic, and roads which arc a heavy burden on the ratepayers.
