MIGHTY SHORE SMITES
A RECENT paragraph in THE . SUN concerned some hefty cricket hits from the Shore ground into the Waitemata harbour. The paragraph was quoted in Southern papers, and reappeared in an Auckland paper last week, with a suggestion that the Auckland harbour "has receded a fair distance since those alleged hits were made.” Mr. J. A. Kallendar, one of the emiters, modestly admits that his dainty drive went over the roofs of the houses, but whether it Jobbed on the rocks or in the harbour is unknown. However the ball was picked out of the tide. Mr, McCrae's long hit was seen to land in the water, and it is now reported that Mr. “Jerry’’ Lundon, a one-time practicing counsel in Auckland, also hit from land to water on the same ground, but there is no official confirmation, and this allegation m *y be a “legal fiction.” Some of our newer critics jsem surprised to learn that “there '/ere 3>ants in those days,” before the two-eyed stance and pat ba.'l became the prevailing fashion.
