CRY OF “TRAITOR!”

SCENE IN CHURCH WOMAN REBUKES PRIEST The reading of a pastoral letter in St. Aloyslus’s Homan Catholic Church, Glasgow, was followed by a heated protest by a woman member of the congregation. As the priest, Father Mcßreathy, finished reading the letter at midday Mass the woman called out: “You are a traitor to the working classes in the district, and to the Labour cause, and I shall not enter this church again until your statements

are withdrawn.” The letter pointed out that Labour candidates at the municipal elections who favoured birth control were opposing the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church.

Members of the congregation were urged to cast their votes against these candidates.

After the letter had been read in St. Columba’s Chapel six men rose and left the church without comment, and toward the end of the Mass the greater proportion of the -congregation rose and silently filed out.
