HAURAKI DRAINAGE
UNITED BOARD MEETS At the monthly meeting of the Hauraki United Drainage Board at Turua progress was reported in connection with the digging of the Te Kauri No. 1 outlet and a contract was let to Mr. W. J. Clare to erect two road bridges and two farmers’ crossings. The chairman, Mr. S. S. Murray, was authorised to arrange a contract at Is a cubic yard for improving the Wharepoa Road North side drain. The board agreed to pay for the electric current used in driving a drainwater pump installed by a group of settlers but not to pay for the charges incurred while the pump was idle. Investigation is to be made into the matter of adopting by-laws. An offer to supply a copy of by-laws suitable was received from a Hamilton man experienced in the matter. Replies, declining to entertain the board’s application for a loan of £I,OOO, were received from the Public Trustee, the Auckland Savings Bank and the Standard Insurance Coy. The board decided to approach the Bank of New Zealand. Advice was received that a further £ 4,000 worth of debentures had been sold by the Bank of New Zealand and the £3,960 realised had been placed to the board’s credit. The chief drainage engineer, Lands Drainage Department, advised that the board would be justified in assuming that it would receive a straight-out grant of £207 for the Te Kauri area. It was decided to visit the Huirau Road area to ascertain whether the complaints of insufficient work in consideration of the amount of rates levied, was justified.
